Who would have thought that the best place in town to stay would be the Comfort Inn. That's the comment from my daughter about the lodging situation in St Augustine Florida.

Although we didn't stay there, the outside looked nicely landscaped and new. That was quite different from the Holiday Inn beachfront hotel where we did stay.

The Holiday Inn drew us in because of the name, which we heretofore trusted as a place of reliable quality. Next time we book a hotel in Florida we will definitely try to determine when it was built.

It seems that the salt water, which calls to us like lemmings to pied piers, also plays havoc with buildings. On the outside balcony overlooking the ocean, one dares not look overhead to the ceiling unless one desires to see bubbly plaster like substances apparently ready to fall at the next stiff wind. Yuck! That's definitely what you don't expect to find with a room that costs $151 during midweek. That's the place that laughingly calls itself a resort.

I also never understood the tourists predilection toward late dining until I was clued into it by an employee of one of the local tourist attractions. When asked what people do after the historic district closes down (dies) by about 6 pm, the response was "Be Bored"! I was rather shocked at the honest but clairvoyant reply. During the day you can spend many hours at the old shops, the fort, Ripley's and the beach. But at night, you should stretch out your activities as long as possible because there isn't much to do except wait in line to eat and then drink at the bar.

Be that as it may, you can rent a car, search for hotels in St Augustine, get airfares and a lot of local destination information. Be sure to check out Ripley's!
